Google starts rolling out Android 8.1 Oreo software update to Pixel and Nexus phones starting today. The Cupertino-major announces the official roll out of the new operating system by posting the system images of the eligible phones on Tuesday. For now, only a select Pixel and Nexus devices including — Pixel 2 and 2 XL, Pixel 1 and 1 XL, Pixel C tablet, and Nexus 6P and 5X will be getting the new software update. If you are the owner of one of the above-mentioned phones, you may have already got the Android 8.1 Oreo update or may get it in the forthcoming days.

Android 8.1 Oreo is basically a minor maintenance release after Google rolled out the Android 8.0 update back in September this year. The key highlight of the new OS is the — Neural Networks API (NNAPI) feature. The Neural Networks API feature is designed in a manner to help phones run machine-learning operations. The API will provide a base layer, higher-level, machine-learning framework to plug into, like Google’s TensorFlow Lite to the supported devices.

Among all the eligible devices for the Android 8.1 Oreo, Pixel 2 is said to be the first one to get the software update. Pixel 2 comes with Google-designed eight-core SoC called the Pixel Visual Core and now with the Neural Networks API coming in the phone will see some major improvements in its camera department. Google’s first-ever consumer SoC — NNAPI, alongside the usual eight-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 coupled with NNAPI functions will make Pixel 2 camera almost “5x faster and at less than 1/10th the energy.”

Alongside bringing improvements to the camera department, Android 8.1 software update is also expected to bring along the Android Go — stripped down version of the latest Android Oreo platform.Google officially announced the roll out of the Android Oreo Go Edition in India  on Tuesday. With Android Go, Google basically plans to to connect the next billion users and it is essentially an operating system designed for entry-level devices that are low on RAM and storage.

The Android 8.1 Oreo update brings a few more tweaks to the Android 8 Oreo. The new OS update brings the Bluetooth battery levels function which was missing in the original Oreo update. Android 8.1 Oreo will allow users to keep a track and know the Bluetooth battery level in the status bar.

It is also adding some burn-in mitigation to the system bar section. Android 8.1 Oreo will turn the always-on bar to an inverted black-on-white color scheme in some apps. Additionally, the new OS will also bring along the new hamburger, beer, and cheese emojis onboard. That being said, with the new software update rolling out, Google fixes the “cheese-burger” error that it made by putting the cheese below the patty in its cheese burger emoji. This became a major topic of discussion, and Google CEO — Sundar Pichai promised to fix the issue — and Google does live up to his words.
